Hesitation Gets You Tackled

Football is the game of the day.
Quarterbacks are today’s heroes. Just look at the frenzy around Tim Tebow, a star on the rise. Yet, there is so much more to the game than win-lose. And sadly, with the huge financial stakes in this “business”, we often forget the bigger picture. It is about more than throwing a ball across a field or catching that ball and running fast and furious across the goal line.
Football is a game of strategy and discipline.
It is about collaboration and cooperation. It is about being the best you can be and working as a cohesive team. It’s a place for leadership development training; that means learning about speaking up or shutting down. Case in point is the film based on actual event "Remember the Titans”. Whether we play or watch, there is often a morality lesson for all of us.
Football is about ethics.
Present case in point is Joe Paterno. His end of life game is certainly hard to watch, whether you have been a dyed in the wool Penn State fan or not. In a recent interview this esteemed coach stated that when he first heard about Sandusky showering with a boy way back in 2002, he was hesitant to make follow up calls. So, he waited. In his words, “I didn’t know what way to go …so rather than get in there and make a mistake…” he trailed off.
Football is about hesitating, avoiding or taking the risk.
When a quarterback hesitates, he is open prey to be tackled to the ground by the opposing team. Isn’t that what Joe Paterno did? He avoided talking immediately. And more than that, once he spoke up he felt he was in the clear, yet he continued to avoid the issue. Now this man was a powerful force at Penn State; an idealized leader. If he had demanded an investigation right then in 2002, he would have been taken seriously.
